Audio Journal Projects
In 2021, a few members of Austin, Texas's immigrant community were invited to collaborate with me on audio recordings. Connected via private Zoom meetings, our conversations about our own and our family’s immigration experiences have revealed various forms of struggles, pain, and fears from the immigration system. Around the same time, I started the "Audio Journal" project, a collection of 1-minute audio recordings made at 11 am over two months by various people from immigrant communities whom we had never met in person but had connected with only online. Through this collective effort of the "Audio Journal" at the same time, but in different time zones in the US, I aim to think about what it means to "connect" during the pandemic, as well as what our understanding of "time". In early 2024, I was invited to have an "Audio Journal" project with international students at the University of Maryland. I interviewed them about their immigration experiences to the US. Then I layered these students' voices with those of other immigrants I have collected to create sound collages that amplify our collective voice and help us be heard in society.
