A series of poems collects language from articles about immigration, revealing the accents of words as a way to abstract terms familiar to native speakers in order to share the experience a non-native speaker has with them. “Journal 1998-2020” is a first phase of the performative approach of Takahashi’s poetry reading project, “Journal”. The reader recites the poem in hushed tones otherwise lost amongst the other noises in the listener’s environment. The readings highlight the listeners' own understanding of the speaker’s ambiguous identity, as well as metaphorically force listeners to question their own assumption of access or highlight their experience lacking it.
