Takahashi started making performances everyday in 2014 to visualize her response to social, cultural and political questions. The photographic works from the early development of the ongoing project, “Seeing you/Seeing Me” (2014-), she explores her discomfiture with the difference in social norms between her home culture and the US. In these images of me in public spaces in Portland, Oregon, Takahashi camouflages, hides, or obscures her physicality, using a small mirrored dome/prop to hide her body or face during random social interactions with strangers. In accompanying video-works, she documents real-time reactions of both herself and the public to these encounters, further investigating those interrelationships. This project started in Portland in 2014, and in 2020, she will expand this project to a larger scale.
